Installation Ubuntu style: Applications --> install/remove --> enter root password --> search for the program you want --> tick its checkbox --> apply --> done.
openSUSE etc.: about the same.
How come difficult?

By the way, doing it in Windows style makes sure the updates aren't coming with the ones for the OS (thus you gotta do it manually) and brings a theoretical chance on malware. And makes it harder because you need to read documentaion about dependancies on other programs (that may be needed or hindering the one you want to install). So it is just a matter of trying to not to go searching the web, as long as the program is available through the software sources.
But I understand that there is a "cultural gap" between Windows and GNU/Linux, so your remark did not surprise me.
