Razer Destructor Mousepad
By: Neil Sloan
A long time ago in a basement far, far away, I bought a mouse called Boomslang. Even though I had never heard of
Razer before, I was intrigued as to all the hype surrounding the mouse. It came in a tin can and was a tad bigger than I was used to but, I was really wanting to use the sucker. So, I plugged it in and so help me God after playing one game session I was hooked on a life long love for all things
Razer. Today, I still own the Boomsland but use the Diamondback. Sure, it is a little old and is showing signs of its age but, I love it and today I got a chance to review the
Razer Destructor mousepad! I could sum up the whole review in five words or so but, I won't as this would be one short review!
I was expecting the
Destructor to arrive at my house however, what I did not expect is how big it would be nor what it came with. Really, everyone should learn from Razer as far as the packaging goes. When I get a mouse pad, this huge package is not what I think I am going to receive.
Razer really knows how to package a mouse pad! This is why my love for
Razer grows everyday! The shots below show what it looked like before I tore it open.
Backside:
After frantically tearing open the package, I soon learned that the
Destructor came with its own case! I am as surprised as you! A nice black case with a zipper with the
Razer logo right in the middle. You can oggle it in the pic below.
After opening my majestic case, I was greeted by not only the mouse pad itself but, a little cellophane package containing something else I did not expect; a certificate of authenticity! You just don't see that much when it comes to mouse pads! Yes, I have a picture of that too!
Then after taking the pictures I needed for the review, I finally was able to use the thing. Was I expecting a big difference? No! I thought it was just a mouse pad how good could it possibly be! It is just a mouse pad after all. Turns out, I was wrong. As the picture below depicts, I was just using a cloth top mouse pad I had and thought nothing of it. I figured as long as the mouse wasn't getting a reflection from my desk, all was good. Then, I used it and oh what a difference it made.
I really though about testing the
Destructor like some other sites have done as the graphs are pretty, however, as I don't really pay attention to the graphs, I thought this might bore most of you as well. And as such you will find no graphs in this review. So, instead of using graphs to show what the pad can do, I tested it on games that I have played for years to see if there was a difference. Here are the games that I used the
Destructor on; Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2, Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East, Frontlines: Fuel of War, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. In all of these games, it is a lot easier to target what I want to aim for. Not only does the mouse move more smoothly, it seems a bit easier to target things that I want to. There is almost no hassle involved with the mouse movement.
I am sure some of you want to see a graph showing how the old pad compares to the
Destructor but, graphs have no bearing on what the
Destructor can actually do. Sure, a graph can show the DPI's and such but, do ya really want to see a graph as opposed to hearing what it can actually do to improve your game? I didn't think so!
I really should mention that the
Destructor is a hardtop mouse pad with a grip like glue! It will stick to almost anything! Not to mention it is very easy to clean as I have spilled beer on it and have had ashes fall on the pad as well. It is so very easy to clean and keeps performing like a good pad should.
As you have seen, the
Razer Destructor is not square. It has some rounded goodness to it. I am guessing most people would use it in the horizontal position as pictured below. This is fine and dandy. I have found a better way to use it though!
Due to the
Destructor's design, used vertically, it can accommodate almost anything you put on the side of it! I use a beer and and ashtray but, I am sure you can change out the ashtray and beer for a plate of salad and a Slimfast if you want but, if you are reading this, I am guessing beer is part of your diet. As you can see in the picture below, these things will just fit perfectly! I really think vertical is the way to go for most people as the Destructor is rather large and can take up a lot of room.
The
Razer Destructor really surprised me. I was not expecting much in the way of better performance as it is, after all, a mouse pad. Tis a good thing I like surprises and Razer keeps doing that all the time.
Now that I have used it for almost two weeks straight for everything including games, normal computer work, and beating the crap out of my friends who try to take it, you just can't beat it! It has surpassed my expectations of what a mouse pad can and can not do not to mention what it should come with!
From the Boomslang to the
Destrcutor, Razer has continually defined what gaming on a PC should be and I look forward to whatever they put out next!
The Good:
Smooth as Ice!
Pretty as they come
Easy to clean
Makes gaming a lot better
Sticks to almost any surface
If set vertically, has a place for drinks and an ashtray (or plate)
The Bad*:
A tad on the expensive side
*See the good
As a side note, I would like to mention that my Razer Diamondback mouse is on its last leg and therefore, is not quite up to par with what the
Destructor is capable of. More than likely, if you have a mouse that works correctly, the
Destructor will do a much better job
Rating:
5 out of 5 stars
5 stars!

I would like to thank
Razer for sending us the
Destructor for review. Not only will I be using it for a long time to come, I think I will be the only person on earth to cut a hole in it for my beer! Razer, you are the man!
